My name is Steve Gwilliam (G8XGG) and I gained my Amateur Radio licence in 1980 at the age of 16 whilst still at school.

In 1983, I joined the BBC's Transmitter Department. Over the following 38 years, I progressed through a number of engineering and management roles within the BBC, National Grid Wireless and, ultimately, Arqiva, where I spent my final 10 years as a Principal Engineer (Radio) before retiring.

My professional background includes high-power Long Wave, Medium Wave, VHF FM and DAB transmission systems, together with the programme distribution infrastructure that supports them.

​

In 2006, together with my wife Linda, I established our amateur radio business, XGGCOMMS, supplying high-quality aftermarket products to the amateur radio community. More recently, we launched ham-interfaces.com, providing modern Digital Mode and CAT Control interfaces together with comprehensive support resources and guides for amateur radio operators.

As radio amateurs ourselves, we understand the importance of reliable, well-designed equipment backed by knowledgeable support.

​

When we're not building and supporting interfaces, you'll usually find us out on our road bikes (normally involving a café stop somewhere along the route) during the summer, or skiing whenever we get the opportunity in the winter.

​

I'm also a keen runner, having completed eight marathons and more than 250 half marathons.
