Understanding Digital Mode Interfaces
Before choosing a Digimode interface, it helps to understand what a digital mode interface actually does. Whether you're operating FT8, FT4, JS8Call, PSK31 or other soundcard-based digital modes, there are several important functions and features to consider. Understanding how audio transfer, PTT control, CAT control and electrical isolation work will make it much easier to select the interface that best meets your operating requirements.
1. Audio Transfer
A digital mode interface must be able to transfer receive audio from the radio to the digital mode software running on your PC and transmit audio from the software back to the radio.
Without this audio path, the software cannot decode incoming signals or generate outgoing digital transmissions.
2. PTT Control
The interface must also be able to place the radio into transmit mode at the correct time and return it to receive mode when the transmission is complete.
This process is known as PTT (Push-To-Talk) control and can be achieved using dedicated PTT switching or VOX (Voice Operated Transmit), depending on the interface and radio being used.
All of our Digimode interfaces support hardware PTT control via the radio's Accessory/Data port PTT line, providing reliable transmitter keying independent of CAT control.
On interfaces that support CAT control, such as our Digimode-4, the radio can alternatively be placed into transmit mode by issuing CAT commands directly from the software. This provides additional flexibility and allows the operator to choose the most suitable method for their particular radio and software combination.
3. CAT Control
While not essential for digital mode operation, many operators appreciate the convenience of CAT (Computer Aided Transceiver) control.
CAT allows software running on your PC to automatically read and control the radio's frequency, operating mode and other settings. Unlike a simple one-way control system, CAT communication is bidirectional, allowing both the radio and software to remain synchronised.
For example, changing frequency or mode within the software can automatically update the radio. Likewise, if the operator changes frequency, mode or other settings directly on the radio, the software can immediately reflect those changes.
This two-way communication not only simplifies station operation and reduces configuration errors, but also enables logging and station-control applications to automatically record operating information such as frequency and mode. This eliminates the need for manual data entry and helps maintain accurate station logs.
CAT control provides a more integrated operating experience when using software such as WSJT-X, JTDX, JS8Call, Ham Radio Deluxe and a wide range of amateur radio logging applications.
4. Audio Isolation
Many digital mode interfaces include audio isolation transformers between the radio and the computer.
Audio isolation helps prevent ground loops, unwanted noise and interference that can sometimes occur when two devices are directly connected together. While digital modes can be operated without audio isolation, many operators prefer the additional protection and noise reduction that isolation can provide.
5. Isolated PTT Switching
Some interfaces also provide isolated PTT control using an optocoupler. This creates an electrical separation between the computer and the radio when switching the transmitter, helping to protect equipment and minimise the possibility of unwanted ground-loop related issues.
