Understanding Digital Mode Interfaces
 

Before deciding which interface best suits your station, it can be helpful to understand the key functions that a digital mode interface performs. While the comparison table above provides a quick way to select a suitable DigiMode interface, the information below explains the technical differences in more detail for operators who would like a deeper understanding.

1. Audio Transfer

All soundcard-based digital modes, including FT8, FT4, JS8Call and PSK31, require audio to be transferred between the radio and the computer.
 

A digital mode interface carries receive audio from the radio to the software running on your PC and returns transmit audio from the software back to the radio. Without this audio path, digital mode software cannot decode received signals or generate transmitted signals.
 

2. PTT Control

The interface must also place the radio into transmit mode when required and return it to receive mode when transmission has completed.
 

This process is known as PTT (Push-To-Talk) control. Depending on the radio and interface being used, transmission can be controlled either through dedicated PTT switching or by using CAT commands.
 

All our DigiMode interfaces provide hardware PTT control via the radio's Accessory or Data port, ensuring reliable transmitter keying.
 

The DigiMode-4 can additionally use CAT commands to place the radio into transmit mode, providing greater flexibility for operators who require integrated station control.
 

3. CAT Control

CAT (Computer Aided Transceiver) control is not essential for digital mode operation, but many operators find it highly convenient.
 

CAT allows software such as WSJT-X, JTDX, JS8Call and Ham Radio Deluxe to read and control the radio's frequency, mode and operating status.
 

Because CAT communication is bidirectional, changes made in the software can automatically update the radio, while changes made on the radio can be reflected immediately within the software.
 

This improves operating convenience, reduces configuration errors and enables logging software to automatically record frequency and mode information.
 

If CAT control is important to your operating style, the DigiMode-4 is the recommended choice.
 

4. Audio Isolation

Audio isolation uses transformers to provide electrical separation between the radio and computer audio circuits.
 

This can help prevent ground loops, unwanted noise and interference that may occur when equipment is directly connected together.
 

The DigiMode-4 and DigiMode-3 both include transformer-isolated audio connections.
 

5. Isolated PTT Switching

Some interfaces also provide isolated PTT control using an optocoupler.

This creates electrical separation between the radio and computer when switching the transmitter and can further reduce the possibility of ground-loop related issues.

The DigiMode-4 and DigiMode-3 provide opto-isolated PTT switching, while the DigiMode-3 Micro is designed as a simpler and more compact solution.
